The Ogun State Government has urged pig farmers to comply strictly with internationally recognised biosecurity measures to curb the spread of African swine fever (ASF) and ensure that suspected outbreaks are properly reported and confirmed. The warning follows claims by farmers that the disease has caused livestock losses estimated at over ₦5 billion across the state.
‎
‎The state government stressed that ASF currently has no approved vaccine or known cure, making early reporting, laboratory confirmation and strict biosecurity essential for controlling the disease. Farmers were advised to report suspected cases to the appropriate federal veterinary authorities for sample collection, testing and diagnosis before seeking government intervention.
‎
‎In response to protests by pig farmers in the Ikangba axis of Odogbolu Local Government Area, who demanded government assistance and compensation for their losses, the government acknowledged their concerns but insisted that formal reports and laboratory evidence were necessary before any compensation could be considered.
‎
‎The government further explained that affected farmers should work through their associations and report to the Federal Ministry of Livestock Development, which would collaborate with State authorities on possible control measures to curb the outbreak.
